New Track

In July 2010 the Board of Trustees of School District 68 voted to allocate the remaining funds necessary to resurface the two tracks and all jump and throw areas of Rotary Bowl. The $240, 000 project was carried out by Tomko Sports Systems of Richmond BC along with the facilities department of SD 68 throughout the month of September and early October 2010. The re-surfacing entailed bringing both the 400 metre oval, 100 metre straight tracks, all jump runs and the javelin and pole vault runs up to the industry recommended depth of 6mm of rubberized surface material on top of an existing 10mm. base. In total, an area of 6005 square metres was re-surfaced. Mandatory and improved line markings were re-done along with painting of all curbs. In addition, the clubhouse was re-roofed and repairs both to the track, a shot put area and to the grandstands were carried out.

Our renovated Rotary Bowl Stadium once again provides greater Nanaimo with a track & field facility second to none in Western Canada. The facility will be able to once again confidently host all events sanctioned by BC Athletics. Performances will be considered for records and our athletes will compete in the knowledge that their facility meets all national and international athletics standards.

As such, Rotary Bowl Stadium will be able to apply for and host track and field competitions at the local, regional, provincial and even national level bringing prestige and economic benefits to the greater Nanaimo community.

The project was the culmination of over four years of fund raising and promotional effort by the NTFC. It was realized through the efforts of the NTFC and of our partners and supporters. Funding came from a $100,000 allocation by our partner, School District 68, which also supervised the project and provided all supplementary maintenance work. With support from the City of Nanaimo a provincial Community Connections Grant provided $60,000. The NTFC and its supporters provided the remaining $80,000 cost of the project.
